Description

The Fuzhou Strait Culture and Art Centre was an idea that aimed at augmenting the cultural identity of Fuzhou as a fast-developing metropolitan capital. The local government organized an international competition in 2013 to establish a new cultural icon for the Mawei New Town, which is one of the major urban areas designed along the Minjiang River.

Architectural & spatial concept

Instead of one large monolithic structure, the design splits the overall program into five different structures. There is a curved, semi-public gallery space lining each of its cores that visually and physically connects interior uses to the adjacent Jasmine Gardens as well as the riverfront.

Interior Design & Acoustics

PES-Architects worked with Taiwanese ceramic artist Samuel Hsuan-yu Shih to design special ceramic panels in the opera and concert halls. These interiors are not only aesthetically expressive, but are also acoustically efficient so as to satisfy the rigorous performance demands.

Technical & Construction Notes

The structure of the opera house is among the largest single-layer shell grid structures of China, with a span as long as 165 m, and a peak height of around 64 m.The louvers system of the terra-cotta was engineered by a lot of solar modeling to maximize the shade without any obstruction to views.
