The newest building of The National Museum Of Qatar is located in Doha City, Qatar, it started to be opened to the public on March 28, 2019. At this museum, there is a palace called Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani’s Palace, which is considered as the core of the Qatari nation, in addition, it’s also identified as a significant landmark with heritage value to Qatar in the 20th century. The style of the national museum is inspired by the desert, and it’s set up by the sea.
The mission of this museum is to advocate the history, culture, and future of Qatar and its people, reflecting Qatari traditions and a sense of pride, while providing foreign visitors with a dialogue about speed development and modernization.
Visitors can pass through some galleries when visiting this national museum, you can find that there are three interrelated themes. The galleries are arrayed in chronological order, it begins with displaying the natural history of the Persian Gulf and the desert, handcrafts with Bedouin culture, the tribal wars, the establishment of the Qatari state, the discovery of oil, etc. These themes can be explored by some audiovisual methods to display collected treasures. These collections include approximately 8000 objects, such as architectural elements, archaeological artifacts, household heritages, decorative arts, textiles, clothes, jewelry, books, and historical articles.
In addition to bring the historical story and culture of Qatar & its people to life, this museum also plays an important role as an evoker to recall the desert from its silence, though it’s a new building. There is something that seems unshakable has been shaken up by this spirit that has come along, and something contradictory in the history has been recalled here. The National Museum Of Qatar is designed with vigor and immersion, it’s a space that brings all people and communities together and experiences the developing process of Qatar.
The museum building was built on the site of the old museum. The architecture designer is Jean Nouvel who is the Pritzker Prize winner, his idea was inspired by the desert rose, which is a mineral structure found under the sand in the bay area. This significant building is the monument to Qatar’s history and is now preserved as the core element of the new NMoQ. There is a concept advocated by Sheikha Al Mayassa is that the relation between the new building and the old building is the developing process from the past to the present.
This national museum has an area of 430,000 sq. Ft. (40.000sq. mt), it has a complex geometric structure like a series of interlaced discs, that forms cavities to prevent the desert heat from approaching the visitors. The museum building is located on a site with 1.5 million sq. Ft. At the south end of Doha’s corniche, it seems like a building rises from the sea and is connected by a road bridge and 2 pedestrian bridges to the shore.
Qatar is a coastal city that was built by the peoples who settled along the seacoast, this coastal area became the port of call for local fishermen, pearl divers, and nomadic people. In addition to the population, the native fauna and flora come together to form their time-honored tradition, and all these elements are the initial historical symbol of Qatar.
The National Museum of Qatar covers a wide area. Once you step inside the exhibition area, you will be shocked by the relationship between the scale and the form, between the theme and the different eras dealt with… between the small desert rose that comes down from out of the mists of time and this outsize creation to us. Even though the desert has entirely changed, it always exists.
This building has an excellent property of energy efficiency. Its structure looks like a series of interlocking discs that can act as a buffer barrier against ultra-violet radiation. The discs cast a wide range of protective shadows when the sun strikes the building from the east or west. Some windows of the building lean back, and there are not many openings, so the interior space can be kept away from the sun, and the interior air can be cost-effectively conditioned to the desired effect.
