Description
The project V on Shenton (also known as the new UIC Building) in Singapore is a mixed-use twin-tower development designed by UNStudio for client UIC Investments (Properties) Pte Ltd. Its significance lies in its transformation of a former landmark commercial site into a combined office + residential development that addresses Singapore’s dense urban context while introducing sky gardens, climate-responsive facades and a sculptural massing that distinguishes programme and form.
Programming & Massing
The development comprises two towers: a 23-storey office tower and a 53-storey residential tower, which clearly express their distinct programmes through the building’s massing. The office tower aligns with the scale and street character of the surrounding CBD (Central Business District) towers. The residential tower rises beyond, defining a landmark vertical presence and offering elevated views. The split-core design and differentiated floor-plate arrangements above the sky lobbies further underscore the residential programme’s vertical segmentation.
Climate-Responsive Facade & Material Strategy
One of the key architectural features is the facade, which employs a hexagonal modular pattern across both towers to improve climate performance and visual expression. For the residential tower, the facade emerges from the stacking of unit types (balconies, bay windows, planters, AC ledges) and material variations to reflect programme and offer shading. For the office tower, a curtain-wall module with an optimized number of panel types was used to achieve a signature pattern while respecting efficiency.
Sky Gardens & Shared Amenities
The design integrates multiple sky-garden levels and shared amenity spaces to enhance liveability and sustainability in a high-density urban setting. A major sky garden spans the entire 8th floor, offering panoramic 360°views of Singapore and offering fitness, swimming, and children’s play areas amidst lush vegetation.
