Project: Lusai Century Marine Hotel – Aluminum Frame with Mesh Facade
Location: Lusail City, Qatar
Products: Aluminum Frame with Mesh Facade
Description
The Century Marina Hotel is a historic hospitality project situated in the upscale Marina District of Lusail City with a smooth, modern exterior that keeps in line with the luxury waterfronts of Lusail City. The facade design incorporates an aluminum-framed mesh system in balancing elegance, functionality, and environmental performance to complement the glass and concrete core structure of the building.
Design & Visual Role
A metal mesh-clad aluminum frame features a semi-transparent skin, offering a modern, textured appearance, while being bound together with high-end marina and waterfront design elements. In the case of a hotel in Lusail Marina, the mesh would provide the appearance of mass reduction, depth due to shadow, and layer translucency, resulting in a sophisticated, modern look that would be in harmony with the glass and polished stone finishes typical of Lusail developments.
Functional Performance
Aluminum mesh screens have practical technical advantages in hot regions: shading of glazing and curtain wall systems, an ability of natural ventilation behind the screen (low cooling loads), and protection of secondary skin against glare and sand/dust. In coastal/marine applications (such as Lusail), the frame and alloy (marine-grade or corrosion-resistant aluminum, and suitable coating and/or anodizing) are significant to design such a frame to last long under the influence of salt air. These practical benefits are the reasons why the Gulf hospitality projects have an expansion of aluminum perforated or expanded-mesh systems.
Materials, Construction & Likely Installation Approach
A classic aluminum frame/ mesh facade system would consist of a load-bearing subframe (aluminum mullions/rails, or light steel frame), pre-fabricated mesh panels (expanded, perforated, woven or stretched mesh), and an anchoring / ventilated anchor system that enables the removal of the panels when needed. To accommodate tolerances and thermal movement, panels can be provided in modular units to be installed on the site quickly and attached to the main facade using adjustable brackets.
